They would bake round cakes to honor the moon goddess, Artemis, and place lit candles on top to symbolize the glow of the moon. The number of candles used on the cake represented the age of the person being celebrated, and it was believed that blowing out the candles made wishes come true.

 

The Chinese

In ancient China, birthday celebrations were reserved for the emperor and the nobility. The Chinese would light candles and place them on cakes to ward off evil spirits and bring good luck. The number of candles used on the cake was also significant, with odd numbers being considered lucky and even numbers being unlucky.

 

The Germans

The Germans are credited with starting the modern tradition of birthday candles. In the 18th century, they began placing candles on cakes to celebrate Kinderfest, a birthday celebration for children. The candles were arranged in a circle on the cake, with one candle for each year of the child's life, plus an additional candle in the center to represent the hope of living for another year.

 

The Americans

The tradition of birthday candles was brought to America by German immigrants in the 19th century. However, it wasn't until the early 20th century that the practice became widespread. The first recorded instance of birthday candles on a cake in America was in 1903, when a cake with candles was featured in an issue of The Farmer's Wife magazine.

Today, you can find candles in all shapes, sizes, and colors, with designs ranging from cartoon characters to sports teams to musical instruments. Some candles even play music or emit a fragrance when lit.

 

In recent years, there has been a trend towards using eco-friendly candles made from soy or beeswax instead of traditional paraffin wax candles. These candles are considered more sustainable and better for the environment.

 

Thus, when we want to light birthday candles, symbolism, and superstitions from across civilisations dating to about 4000 years ago come into play. By lighting one candle, we denote unity and in extension an invocation to existence or blessings. By connecting 2-12 candles, or any even numbers, one creates binary series which resonate with philosophy, mathematics but are also associated with good-luck, pair blessings, balance and the alike. likewise, by lighting three candles with odd-numbered years, we resonate with Pythagoras teaching on triangles, Threeness as Socrates would affectionately call it. It detones reflections of philosophical, mathematical, and myth build-up, especially trinities which permeate human experiences: Holy Trinity, myths, Greek sages and sometimes religious rites.

 

However, as older practitioners of this centuries-long traditions die, heritage push away gradually, and quickly crystallises around the capitalism flavour that permeates its wider landscape.

 

The tradition of placing candles on a birthday cake has a rich and varied history, spanning across different cultures and religions. From the ancient Greeks and Romans to modern-day America, birthday candles have evolved over time, becoming more elaborate and diverse.
